Editorial Policy - C2PA.ai

C2PA.ai exists to be the most accurate, comprehensive, and honest resource on content provenance. This policy describes the standards we hold ourselves to and the processes that support them.

Editorial principles

Accuracy first
Every factual claim in our content is sourced from official specifications, published documentation, manufacturer announcements, regulatory texts, or direct verification. When we reference firmware versions, menu paths, or technical details, we verify them against primary sources. When we can't verify a claim, we say so.
Honesty about limitations
We cover C2PA because we believe it's important, not because we believe it's perfect. Every guide we write includes honest discussion of limitations, gaps, and trade-offs. We will never overstate the capabilities of the standard or understate its weaknesses to make C2PA look better than it is.
Independence from industry
No company, organisation, or individual outside our editorial team has editorial control over our content. We do not submit articles for pre-publication review by companies we cover. We do not accept payment for favourable coverage. Sponsorship and advertising are clearly separated from editorial content and are always labelled.
Accessibility
We write for both technical and non-technical audiences. Every guide uses the simplest language that accurately conveys the information. Jargon is defined on first use and linked to our glossary. We believe that content provenance is too important to be gated behind technical literacy.

How we source information

Primary sources. We prioritise official C2PA specifications, camera manufacturer documentation, software release notes, regulatory texts (e.g. the EU AI Act), and official company announcements. Links to primary sources are provided where possible.

Direct testing. For camera guides and tool reviews, we verify features and menu paths through hands-on testing or confirmation with multiple independent sources. We do not publish camera setup instructions based solely on press releases.

Expert input. We engage with developers, photographers, policy experts, and other professionals working in content authenticity. When we incorporate their perspectives, we attribute them unless anonymity is requested.

What we don't use. We do not source information from anonymous forums, unverified social media posts, or press releases without independent confirmation. We do not present speculation as fact.

Corrections process

When we identify an error - or a reader brings one to our attention - we follow this process:

Factual errors are corrected immediately. The corrected text replaces the incorrect text, and a note is added at the bottom of the page describing the correction, the date, and (if the reader wishes) credit to the person who reported it.

Outdated information (e.g. a firmware version that has been superseded) is updated with the current information. The page's "Last updated" date is changed to reflect the update. We don't add correction notes for routine updates - only for errors.

Disputed claims where reasonable people could disagree are handled by presenting multiple perspectives. We don't remove content simply because someone disagrees with our analysis, but we will add additional context or alternative viewpoints if warranted.

Sponsored content

C2PA.ai accepts sponsorship and sponsored content under the following rules:

Always labelled. Sponsored content is labelled with "Sponsored by [Company Name]" at the top of the page. Newsletter sponsorship is labelled within the newsletter. There is no ambiguity about what is sponsored and what is editorial.

Editorial voice. Sponsored articles are written by our editorial team in our editorial voice. The sponsor may suggest the topic and review the draft for factual accuracy about their product, but they do not have editorial control over the content, conclusions, or comparisons.

No influence on editorial. Sponsorship does not influence our editorial content. A company that sponsors our newsletter does not receive more favourable coverage in our guides, comparisons, or analysis. If we compare products, the comparison reflects our editorial assessment regardless of commercial relationships.

Selective acceptance. We reserve the right to decline sponsorship from any company whose product or practices are inconsistent with the mission of content authenticity. We do not accept sponsorship from companies that produce AI-generated disinformation tools, deepfake services, or products designed to circumvent content provenance systems.

Consulting services

C2PA.ai offers consulting services for organisations implementing C2PA. This is a commercial activity and is separate from our editorial work. The existence of a consulting relationship with a company does not influence how we cover that company editorially. If we write about a consulting client in our editorial content, we will disclose the relationship.

Domain and trademark

C2PA.ai is operated under the domain c2pa.ai. We use this domain because it accurately describes our subject matter. We are not affiliated with the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI), or any of their member organisations. "C2PA" and "Content Credentials" are trademarks of their respective owners. Our use of these terms is descriptive and journalistic.

Every page on our site carries a footer disclaimer stating our independence from the C2PA coalition. This transparency is not legally required for nominative fair use, but we include it because transparency is the foundation of our editorial mission - and it would be contradictory to publish a site about content authenticity without being authentic about our own position.

Questions

If you have questions about our editorial practices, email [email protected]. We welcome feedback and scrutiny - it's how we stay honest.
