Sony has been expanding C2PA support beyond its initial flagship implementation. Check for the latest firmware at sony.com/support. Additional Alpha bodies are expected to receive support through future firmware updates.

Setup: step by step

Step 1
Update firmware

Download the latest firmware for your camera from Sony's support website. Install it following Sony's standard firmware update procedure (copy to the root of your memory card, then update via the camera menu). The C2PA menu options will only appear once the minimum firmware version is installed.

Step 2
Install Sony Creators' App

Content Credentials on Sony cameras are managed through the Sony Creators' App (formerly Imaging Edge Mobile). Download or update it on your phone (iOS/Android). This app handles the certificate provisioning process.

Step 3
Pair and provision

Pair your camera with the Creators' App via Bluetooth. Then navigate to the Content Credentials section within the app. Sign in with your Sony account and follow the prompts to provision a C2PA signing certificate to your camera.

During provisioning, you can configure optional fields: creator name, copyright notice, and whether to include GPS data from your phone (relayed to the camera via Bluetooth).

Step 4
Enable on camera

On your Sony camera, navigate to:

Menu → Setup → Content Credentials → On

The exact menu path may vary slightly by model and firmware version. On the a9 III, it's under the Setup tab (toolbox icon). Once enabled, a small indicator appears in the viewfinder confirming that images will be signed.

Step 5
Capture and verify

Take a test photo, transfer the original file (ARW raw or JPEG) to your computer, and upload to contentcredentials.org/verify. A valid credential should show the Sony camera model, capture timestamp, and your configured metadata.

New camera support, firmware updates, and workflow tips.

Sony-specific notes

GPS via phone. Unlike Nikon cameras with built-in GPS, Sony Alpha bodies typically rely on the companion app to relay GPS coordinates via Bluetooth. If you want location data in your Content Credentials, ensure the Creators' App is connected and location sharing is enabled during shooting.

Video support. As of early 2026, Sony's C2PA implementation covers still images (ARW and JPEG). Video signing support has been announced but is not yet available in shipping firmware. Check Sony's release notes for updates on video Content Credentials.

Performance. Sony's implementation has no measurable impact on continuous shooting speed or buffer performance. The a9 III maintains its full 120fps burst rate with Content Credentials enabled.

Editing workflow

Sony ARW files with Content Credentials are fully supported in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. The provenance chain is maintained through editing and export when using C2PA-aware software. Sony's own Imaging Edge Desktop does not currently write C2PA manifests during raw development, so export through Adobe tools for full chain preservation.

Coming soon: more Alpha bodies

Sony has indicated that C2PA support will expand to additional Alpha models through firmware updates. The a7 IV, a7C II, and FX-series cinema cameras are expected to receive support. We update the Adoption Tracker as new implementations ship.
